Gauhar Khan was born as Gauhar Zafar Khan on 23rd August 1983 into a Muslim family in Pune, Maharashtra state. She is the youngest of six siblings while one of her sisters named Nigaar Khan is also an actress. She belongs to South Asian ethnicity and holds an Indian nationality.

Gauhar has done her schooling at Mount Carmel Convent School, Lulla Nagar, Pune, and received her bachelor's degree from Ness Wadia Collge of Commerce, Pune. After completing her education she started her career as a model and did many commercial advertisements.

She started her career as a model when she was only 18 years old in 2002 and become popular within a very short time in India. Gauhar Khan was the third runner-up of Femina Miss India beauty pageant in 2002. She has also represented India in the Miss International contest and was amongst the top fashion models during the years 2002 to 2006.

After establishing herself as a top model she turned to act. Gauhar Khan made her acting debut through a small role in the Hindi film in 2004.

Gauhar Khan made her debut on the big screens with Aditya Chopra's 2009 film starring Ranbir Kapoor.
